The Curse of
Unfinished Riga

The legend that keeps the city building forever

Once every hundred years, as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, the dark waters of the Daugava river begin to stir. From the cold depths, an ancient water spirit emerges onto the shore.

It walks to the city walls, knocks on the heavy gates, and asks the first person it meets a single question:

"Tell me, is Riga finished yet?"

The locals know: the answer must remain unchanged. Legend has it that if someone, out of pride or ignorance, answers "Yes", the city will instantly sink underground or be swallowed by the waters of the Daugava forever.

And so, the hammers never stop, the scaffolding never disappears, and Riga continues to build, century after century.
